Well-designed Alternative Payment Models (APMs) incentivize patient health outcomes, either via a direct payer-provider contract or through a clinically integrated network (CIN). Since APM contracts are negotiated on a potential future outcome, they can include unfamiliar and even risky elements that parties should understand at the outset.
